Positive Behaviour Support

Color Stain

Every child challenges their parents at times by engaging in behaviours we define as inappropriate.
This is normal! Children are learning to follow rules in society and it is our job as parents to guide
them to communicate their needs appropriately and to grow and strive in the community.

Some behaviours, however, might pose difficulties in everyday life, and parents might find it difficult to redirect their child to follow directions or to complete everyday routines without a fight. Some behaviours might be dangerous to the child or others and can seriously affect the quality of life of the whole family.

For example, a child may scream and cry for long periods or engage in aggressive behaviours. A child might take a very long time to get ready to leave the house or go to bed.

These behaviours might be occurring at home, at school, or in the community. They can also cause major disruptions in your child and family’s life, such that your child is unable to participate in activities alongside their peers.

Parents may have tried different strategies or even met with different professionals without much improvement.

For this type of behaviours, more intensive support might be needed.

Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence- based program that looks at the reason why the challenging behaviour is occurring. It focuses holistically on the whole child, the environment, their health, and interactions with others in their daily lives. Positive Behaviour Support aims to create a shared understanding of why your child is engaging in the behaviour and develop a plan to address the needs identified.

The end outcome is a detailed step-by-step Behaviour Support Plan that will guide you on how to deal with these challenges when they occur and to promote positive change.

The goal of the program is to work with you and the team around your child to implement changes because you are the most important person in your child’s life.

Positive Behaviour Support is not only used with children. It can support individuals of any age experiencing challenges with behaviour.
